Marcelo Balboa Discusses the Search for the Next Soccer Superstar, and the Increased Popularity of Soccer in the U.S.
The search is on for the best teen female soccer player in the U.S. in an all-new season of Soccer Superstar, a NickSports reality competition series, premiering Friday, July 15, on Nicktoons. Hosted by gold medalist Heather Mitts, the second season of the series follows 12 elite female soccer players’ journey to win the opportunity to meet and train with a National Women’s Soccer League team and a shot at being the next Soccer Superstar. Soccer Superstar will air back-to-back premieres every Friday at 10 p.m. (ET/PT) for three weeks starting July 15 on Nicktoons.
National Soccer Hall of Famer Marcelo “Iron Man” Balboa is among the panel of judges who will critique the athletes’ performances as they compete in various challenges and face elimination. Marcelo can discuss the series, as well as the growing popularity of soccer in the U.S. According to a recent ESPN Poll, professional soccer ranked as the No. 2 sport, behind pro football, among 12- to 17-year-olds. The survey found that Major League Soccer was as popular as Major League Baseball among the same age group.
